About the Exhibition

This exhibition celebrates the artistry and vision of Newark native Timothy J. Simmons, whose paintings offer a powerful counter-narrative to stereotypes surrounding African American life. Through intimate and “conventional” depictions of family moments of joy, music, marriage, and togetherness Simmons invites viewers into a dialogue on race, identity, and belonging. His work reflects a commitment to showcasing Black excellence and affirming that African American lives hold a vital place in the American story. A Family Affair is both a tribute to familial love and a call for social change through art.

About the Artist

Timothy J. Simmons is an African American artist from Newark, NJ, whose passion for art began at Arts High School, where he studied under influential artists such as Willie Cole and Gladys Barker Grauer. His early work was exhibited at City Without Walls Gallery, and he earned recognition through national art competitions. After a hiatus, Simmons rediscovered his love for painting during the pandemic while creating art with his daughter. His work reflects a deep commitment to portraying African American life with honesty and beauty, leaving a legacy that asserts the significance of Black experiences in American history.

Timothy J. Simmons’ work is rooted in social commentary and the pursuit of authentic representation. His paintings challenge negative stereotypes by presenting African American families in everyday, “conventional” contexts playing music, celebrating milestones, and sharing quiet moments.
