Mission Statement

Kean Galleries and Collections is a professional university program that exhibits, preserves, and provides access to art and historical primary source materials that advance creative practice, research, learning, and teaching. Through campus exhibitions, public programs, and hands-on engagement with collections — including artwork, special collections, and archives — we support artists, scholars, strengthen academic and career pathways, and deepen community connection by exploring issues from local histories to global perspectives.

Vision Statement

Kean Galleries and Collections work through two distinct yet interconnected divisions to build relationships with the community and encourage critical thinking.

Kean Galleries generates community impact and cross-department connection with exhibitions in six gallery spaces twice per year on the Union and Jersey City campuses. Interpretation and related programming are an impactful vehicle for social change and the integration of visual and material culture with academic and outreach programs.

Special Collections and Archives stewards artwork and four centuries of historical materials and makes them accessible to transform teaching, research, and public understanding of global issues and the past. The collections empower users to generate original scholarship and creativity, build primary source literacy, and reflect on how the past shapes the present.

Licensing and Permissions

Permission may be requested to license, publish and distribute select materials from the Galleries at Kean collection. Additional questions can be sent to galleries@kean.edu. Please note: Copyrights for all material remain with Kean University and requests for usage are responded to in the order received.

Student assistants, graduate assistants, and academic specialists are a critical part of the Galleries and Collections unit, acting as docents and supporting special projects. If you are a student currently enrolled at Kean University and wish to support us as a student assistant, please follow the link below to apply to an assistant role. Enrolled students interested in paid and credit based internships or graduate assistantships should reach out to a faculty member and indicate their interest in supporting Galleries and Collections. If you are a recent graduate from an accredited four year or graduate program and are interested in supporting special projects as an academic specialist, please email your resume and a letter stating your interest as a single PDF to galleries@kean.edu or collections@kean.edu.
