A Family Affair: Reception

This exhibition celebrates the artistry and vision of Newark native Timothy J. Simmons, whose paintings offer a powerful counter-narrative to stereotypes surrounding African American life. Through intimate and “conventional” depictions of family moments of joy, music, marriage, and togetherness which lures viewers into a dialogue revolving around race, identity, belonging, and the impact of Black excellence on American history and popular culture. During these events we will not only be paying homage to the exhibition but also listening to Timothy’s own testimonial on how his art showcases the strength and unity of the African American family.
